180 degree turn

Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Ōmisoka, & New Years Eve/Day all have a significant impact on the mood of people around the world for about 30-45 days. The Holiday Season is known for spreading joy and merriment. At times even the most dour of curmudgeons can be jovial and accommodating. This may be download (1)directly related to the fear of being visited by the 3 ghosts as Ebeneezer Scrooge was, but I think not.

During this time of year, the material aspect of these holidays overtakes us. There are many that shun the reference to gifts , shopping decorations and the like, lamenting that the real meaning of the holiday is lost, but I believe it is the opposite.

You see, there are millions of people that celebrate these holidays that are not very download (2)religious. If based solely on the dogma of the day, they would more than likely ignore it. By thinking of buying gifts, visiting relatives and friends, having and attending parties we are directed toward thoughts of the joy these people bring to our lives, the gratitude we have for our inclusion in theirs and the appreciation for what download (3)we have, can share, and look forward to giving/getting.

For Christians at Christmas, the supposed “Real Meaning” is the Birth of the Savior which brings with it hope, renewal and the possibility of better days. If a family is not completely focused on honoring the birthday of Jesus, yet they do a complete 180 from selfish, judgmental, negative habits and become outgoing, caring and pleasant (even it does not last), I say “win-win” wouldn’t you?

My last article discussed gratitude as an attitude adjustment. Follow up the Thanksgiving season with 30-40 days of selfless reflection on making our families and friends happy is a pretty good recipe for Joy. You all know I am an advocate for being positive, and am continuously explaining how the attitude and perspective that is most prevalent in our mind will attract and create conditions that are aligned, so in my mind, anything that has us go from miserable to social is helping to transform the world.

I know it is cliché to claim it should be Christmas every day, but we take what we can get. The fact that millions look forward to this season as the catalyst to allow them to be the joyful caring person they really want to be anyway, is a good thing. It is a shame that we need a Holiday to give us permission to be caring, but whatever it takes is fine with me. Sooner or later, we will realize that the Holiday version of ourselves, the one we look forward to, is ok to display for the other 11 months. That may take away from the special nature of the season, but I am willing to take that risk.download (4)

Deck the halls and all that good stuff, shoot for 24/7/365, see how you like it!

Merry Christmas, and Happy February 10th, June 7, September 22. You Can Do It!
